Authoritative Parenting Style

In this section, we will explore the authoritative parenting style, as defined by Diana Baumrind. Recognized as the preferred approach, authoritative parenting is known for considering the full range of a child's developmental needs, balancing structure with warmth and support.

Mufasa: The authoritative disney parent

Mufasa consistently showed patience and love when speaking to Simba. After Simba ventured into the elephant graveyard against his father's wishes, Mufasa expressed his concerns and calmly explained why it was a dangerous decision. He also gave Simba the space to ask questions, fostering open communication. Throughout the movie, Mufasa teaches Simba about the world, emphasizing the importance of humility and the responsibilities he will one day inherit. At the same time, he encourages Simba to embrace playfulness, striking a balance between wisdom and joy.

Growing up, I didn’t have authoritative parents, but deep down, I always knew that was the kind of parenting style I needed. As a teenager, I became especially close to my Auntie Donna, who embodied the qualities of an authoritative figure; she was patient, kind, loving, and always willing to help. She created an environment where I never felt afraid to share anything with her, and at the same time, she was straightforward and honest, never sugarcoating anything. This open communication and the sense of security I felt in her presence had a profound impact on my confidence and overall well-being.

Looking back, I realize how much her approach influenced me in a positive way. Her ability to balance warmth with clear expectations helped me feel understood and supported, which ultimately shaped my sense of self-worth. As I pursue a career in nursing, particularly in pediatrics, I recognize how valuable this experience will be. Working with children, I will need to communicate effectively, show empathy, and provide guidance while also creating a safe space for them to express themselves. The lessons I learned from my aunt will help me understand how to approach children with care, patience, and respect, traits that are central to the authoritative parenting style and crucial for anyone working in child-centered fields.
